Amal Oils 100% Organic Argan Oil originates in the argan forest in southwestern Morocco. The endangered argan tree (Argania spinosa) is a relic of the Tertiary era (65 million to 1.8 million years ago). The argan tree is a 100% renewable resource - its wood is used for fuel, its oil for cosmetic and culinary purposes, and its fruit and leaves as goat feed.
Two thousand years ago, approximately three million acres of argan forest existed, while today the trees cover only two million acres. Despite their remarkable ability to adapt to drought and other environmentally difficult conditions, the argan tree is diminishing at a rapid pace. As a result of these astonishing depletion rates, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the Moroccan argan forest and its surroundings a World Biosphere Reserve in 1999. The biosphere reserve serves to prevent excessive human exploitation, further research and promote socio-economic development. The majority of the 2.5 million inhabitants living in the biosphere reserve are of Berber origin.
